National Education Association Backs Heinrich

Submitted by campaign staff on May 16, 2008 - 10:17am.

Today, the National Education Association (NEA) announced their support for Martin Heinrich. The NEA is the 14th major union to support Martin Heinrich's candidacy. No other First Congressional District candidate has received a union endorsement.

The NEA is the third major teacher's organization to endorse Martin's candidacy. The Albuquerque Federation of Teachers Local 1420 and the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico previously endorsed Martin Heinrich.

"From my experience working with kids at the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, I know first hand how a quality public education can enhance a child's life and create opportunities that might not otherwise be available." said Martin Heinrich. "We must make sure our teachers have the resources they need to open doors and create opportunities for all of New Mexico's children."

The NEA represents 3.2 million teachers nationwide.

Flip, Flop! Why Did Darren White Leave the Johnson Administration?

Submitted by campaign staff on May 14, 2008 - 8:41am.

Darren White is fond of saying that he left Gov. Johnson's administration because he is a strong supporter of the war on drugs. Now, it appears that he supported Gov. Johnson's drug legalization policies before he was against them.

According to White's campaign website:

White served as Cabinet Secretary for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety under Governor Gary Johnson... White resigned his Cabinet position after Governor Johnson began advocating the legalization of drugs.

But, in 1999, he told the publication Razor Wire:

We're not going to arrest ourselves out of this drug problem. The governor is absolutely right. We should be looking at other options because our current policy is failing.

Which is it, Sheriff? Why did you really leave Gov. Johnson's administration? Was it because your fellow police officers overwhelmingly voted no confidence in your leadership?

New Mexico deserves honest leadership in Congress - not more misleading politicians.

ABQ Journal Endorses Martin Heinrich

Submitted by campaign staff on May 12, 2008 - 10:31am.

Citing his ability to build consensus and get things done, the Albuquerque Journal strongly endorsed Martin Heinrich in the Democratic Primary. The Journal:

Martin Heinrich established a record of putting one foot in front of the other to build consensus on the often contentious Albuquerque City Council. His liberal leanings are clear, but so is the pragmatism and respect for other points of view that endow Heinrich with the ability to listen, accommodate and move difficult initiatives forward. That would be a welcome talent in Congress.

Martin Heinrich listens to his constituents and works across party lines to get things done. As the Journal notes, he takes on the tough issues, brings people together, and delivers for working families. The Journal:

The Heinrich Maneuver was key to navigating the controversy of the city minimum wage ordinance and producing a measure that the business community and activists could live with. It was apparent outside of City Hall when he worked with ranchers, Native Americans and outdoor recreation interests to build the bridges that helped lead to federal establishment of the Ojito Wilderness.

The minimum wage was a tough fight and there were a lot of stakeholders involved. But, Martin knew he had to get the job done because hard working New Mexicans struggling with stagnant wages needed a raise. He brought people together and forged a solution that kept our economy strong and helped our workers. The Journal continues:

Issues topping Heinrich's list that are in dire need of consensus include health care reform, re-energizing the economy with investments in green technology, middle-class tax relief, securing U.S. borders and setting a realistic timeline for withdrawing from Iraq. An electrical engineer by training, he has a keen appreciation of the national labs' role in national security, research and the New Mexico economy.

The Journal endorses Martin Heinrich in the Democratic primary.

Martin Heinrich is committed to ending the war in Iraq and strengthening our economy at home. He'll work to create good paying 'green' collar jobs in clean technology, provide middle class families with tax relief and he'll work toward a responsible timeline for bringing our troops home from Iraq.

The Journal endorsed Martin Heinrich because he has a proven record of tackling tough issues and bringing people together to solve them. That's exactly the kind of leadership New Mexico needs in Congress.

Martin Heinrich has the right experience to serve in Congress. The son of an IBEW lineman and a factory worker, Martin Heinrich understands the struggles of working families and that's why he's always standing up for working people.

As President of the Albuquerque City Council, Martin stood up to the special interests and brought people together to pass an increase to the minimum wage. As Governor Richardson's Natural Resources Trustee, Martin worked to conserve New Mexico's enchanting landscape. And, as a director of an educational not-for-profit, Martin Heinrich touched the lives of hundreds of children.

In Congress, Martin Heinrich will work to end the war in Iraq and strengthen our economy. He won't ever forget where he came from. He'll always stand up to the special interests and put hard working New Mexico families first.

New Mexico needs genuine, honest leadership in Congress that stands up for working families. If you agree that this is the kind of change we need in Washington, I hope you'll vote for Martin Heinrich today! Request your vote by mail ballot and cast your ballot for Martin Heinrich.

DPNM: "Darren White Comes from the George Bush School of Leadership"

Submitted by campaign staff on May 8, 2008 - 2:59pm.

The Democratic Party of New Mexico is calling into question Darren White's competence and qualification to serve in the U.S. House. DPNM Executive Director Josh Geise:

The fact that the people who knew Darren White's work best - the state troopers - had no confidence in him raises serious issues about his leadership and qualifications to serve in Congress. Darren White clearly comes from the George Bush leadership school: ignore anyone that has a dissenting opinion and act despite the risks. That is the last thing we need more of in Washington.

This statement came after the Albuquerque Journal reported on a 1999 vote of no confidence in Darren White's leadership by state troopers. If the people that work with Darren White - who are charged with protecting New Mexicans - don't believe he's a good leader, why does anyone think he would be a good member of Congress?

The fact is that Darren White is not only a George Bush Republican who supports the failed policies of the President's administration, but, now it's also clear that there are serious questions about his competence.

Come Together

Submitted by Oscar Lopez on May 7, 2008 - 10:58am.

Do you have plans for Saturday afternoon? If not, now you do! You're cordially invited to join Martin and Julie Heinrich for the grand opening of our office at 131 Adams St. NE (just off Central, between Carlisle & San Mateo). There will be good food, good company, activities for the kids and the opportunity to talk to Martin about the issues that matter to you. The festivities kick off at 2 pm. Make sure to RSVP for this - or another event around the district - today!

RSVP NOW!

Our campaign for change is kicking into high gear and we've got all the momentum. Just this week, one of America's largest unions, SEIU, formally endorsed Martin's candidacy. IBEW Local 611 also recently endorsed Martin.

While Martin is putting together a diverse, winning coalition, Darren White is embracing George Bush. Yesterday, White, Bush's 2004 campaign chair, announced that the President would be coming to Albuquerque to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for his campaign from rich Republican elites who can afford to spend $5,000 for a picture with George Bush.

It's no wonder that Bush is supporting White - after all, White is a George Bush Republican who supports Bush's failed policies that have resulted in endless war in Iraq and a sluggish economy that's causing too many middle class families to struggle.

If you want to fight back against the Bush/White machine, it's time for Democrats to come together and support Martin Heinrich - an honest leader whose help our next President will need to turn back the tide on the destructive policies of George Bush and put America back on the right track. One way to help is by attending this Saturday's office opening party - or another event across the district - between now and June 3rd. Together, we can send a strong message that New Mexicans are sick and tired of the failed policies of George Bush that Darren White so strongly embraces.

RSVP FOR AN EVENT TODAY!

I hope to see you this Saturday! Thanks so much for your support.
