New Mexicans have long answered the call of duty to serve our nation. This tradition runs deep in our state’s history, and at times New Mexico has had the highest rate of military volunteerism of any state in the country. A steadfast supporter of America’s troops, Martin recognizes the sacrifices our active duty military, their families, and veterans make to keep our nation safe.

Our men and women in uniform make up the strongest, best-trained, most well-equipped military in the world. In the last year alone, we have devastated al Qaeda's leadership by killing Osama bin Laden. Through NATO, we’ve built a broad coalition to liberate the people of Libya without the loss of a single U.S. soldier.

Martin stridently opposed our war in Iraq. Ending that war was a top priority for him when he came to Congress in January 2009. He is now doing all he can to speed up the end of combat operations in Afghanistan, for he believes that it is time to bring all of our brave men and women home to their families.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Martin has played a critical role in decisions affecting Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Laboratories. He passed legislation to ensure the 150th Fighter Wing at Kirtland, commonly referred to as the “Tacos,” was given a follow-on mission. This single act saved hundreds of jobs. Martin also has been recognized as a leader in ensuring that our national laboratories receive the resources they need to carry out their national security missions.

Martin has also been a consistent voice for human and constitutional rights, supporting the notion that America can be both safe and free. Most recently, he opposed the authorization of the PATRIOT Act and was an active proponent of doing away with the discriminatory military policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
