Candidate is Women’s Health Champion

ALBUQUERQUE (Feb. 21, 2012) - The Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement today of Democratic candidate Martin Heinrich in his race for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation's leading reproductive health care provider and advocate.

“You have been a strong supporter of women's health and we know you will continue to be a dedicated advocate for our organization,” said President of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Cecile Richards in a letter to Heinrich.

“For 95 years Planned Parenthood has provided women and families in New Mexico with vital health care services and education and it is truly an honor to receive their endorsement,” said Heinrich. “New Mexicans can count on me to continue to stand up for women’s health and reproductive rights, and support policies based on commonsense and science, not the demands of the special interests and ideological crusaders.”

Martin Heinrich is a longtime champion of women’s rights. From his earliest days in Congress, Heinrich has stood up for women’s health and equality, including a woman’s right to affordable health care and the right to choose. When Republicans in the House sought to restrict how women with private insurance could spend private dollars through the Stupak-Pitts amendment to the Affordable Health Care Act, Heinrich voted no. When the Republican majority tried to cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood, which provides essential health services to one in five women at some point in their life, Heinrich fought back.

New Poll - A Message from Steve http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/new-poll-a-message-from-steve Thu, 16 Feb 2012 11:49:00 -0500 http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/new-poll-a-message-from-steve I just wanted to let you know about a new poll that was just released by conservative-leaning pollster Rasmussen Reports showing Martin leading Heather Wilson 45 to 43 percent.

These numbers show what every other poll we have seen in this race shows: Martin is in the lead and is the best-positioned candidate to beat Heather Wilson. But it will be close.

So we cannot slow down now, which is why we need your help.

Would you please make a contribution of $25, $50, or even $100 today and help Martin continue his momentum in this race?

The Republicans have cleared the primary field for Heather. Now that they have seen these poll numbers, you can rest assured that Karl Rove and his millionaire friends will be putting lots of money into New Mexico to defeat Martin.

We will not stand for this!

Martin is running a people-powered campaign, which is how he overcame these types of attacks in 2010 and how, with your help, he will win this race in 2012.

Please make a donation of $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can afford today and ensure Martin has the resources he needs to keep this blue.

Sincerely,

Steve

PS – Your donation of $25, $50, $100 or more today will help keep another U.S. Senate seat Democratic.  Please make your contribution TODAY!

Martin Heinrich for U.S. Senate in New Mexico.

“Martin Heinrich has demonstrated a commitment to commonsense animal protection policies,” said Sara Amundson, executive director of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “We urge voters who care about the humane treatment of animals to vote for Martin Heinrich statewide for U.S. Senate.”

Heinrich has supported a number of federal policies to stop animal cruelty and abuse. Among his efforts, he has:

  • Co-sponsored the Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act, which passed in 2010 and banned commerce in videos showing the intentional torture of puppies, kittens and other live animals for the sexual titillation of viewers (P.L. 111-294).
  • Co-sponsored the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, H.R. 1513, to phase out use of chimpanzees in invasive research, retire the approximately 500 federally-owned chimpanzees to sanctuary, and save tens of millions of tax dollars from warehousing chimps in federally-funded laboratories.
  • Championed the permanent retirement of 202 chimpanzees at the Alamogordo Primate Facility to a sanctuary, providing for their welfare and saving millions of taxpayer dollars.
  • Co-sponsored the Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety (PUPS) Act, H.R. 835, to crack down on abusive “puppy mills” in the United States, where breeding dogs are often stacked in wire cages for years to produce litter after litter, without exercise, veterinary care, socialization or human companionship.
  • Co-sponsored the Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act, H.R. 2492, to establish misdemeanor penalties for knowingly attending an organized dogfight or cockfight, and felony penalties for taking a minor to such a fight.
  • Co-sponsored the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, H.R. 2966, to prohibit the long-distance transport (including export) of horses for slaughter for human consumption in other countries where horse meat is eaten.

ALBUQUERQUE (Jan. 6, 2012) — Today, New Mexico State Representative Antonio “Moe” Maestas announced his endorsement of Martin Heinrich in his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

In a statement announcing his support Rep. Maestas praised Heinrich’s commitment to New Mexico’s families. “Now, more than ever, we need a thoughtful, courageous leader who will fight for working families. “Martin is a tough and tested candidate who will lead us to victory in November,” Rep. Maestas continued.  “He won a congressional seat held for 26 years by Republicans and held it for us despite the right-wing backlash of 2010. Martin held the seat by holding on to his principles. I have no doubt that he will continue to stand up for working families as our U.S. Senator.”

“I am honored to receive the support of Rep. Maestas,” said Heinrich. “Moe is a strong community leader and dedicated advocate for the middle- and working-class families of New Mexico. I am deeply humbled to have his support as well as the backing of so many other local leaders across the state.”

New Poll Shows the Momentum Continues for Heinrich http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/latest-public-policy-polling-poll Wed, 14 Dec 2011 18:41:00 -0500 http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/latest-public-policy-polling-poll Raleigh, N.C. – PPP’s latest poll of the race to replace New Mexico Sen. Jeff Bingaman shows that, at least right now, the candidates most likely to win the respective party primaries are the two strongest general-election candidates, based on name recognition.

Rep. Martin Heinrich would defeat former Rep. Heather Wilson by a seven-point (47-40) margin if the election were today.  Wilson is down two points from a 47-42 deficit when PPP last polled the state in June.  Were Hector Balderas to defeat Heinrich in the primary, he would tie Wilson at 43%, a decline of six points in six months for the State Auditor.  The other Republicans tested—Lt. Gov. John Sanchez and businessman Greg Sowards, both far less-recognized names than Wilson’s—would fall to Balderas by respective seven- and 14-point margins, and to Heinrich by 11 and 18.

"As a proud New Mexican, whose family has lived in this state for generations, I know that Martin shares my values of hard work, compassion, and equality."

TAOS, NM - Today, among a crowd of supporters in Taos, New Mexico, Martin Heinrich received the endorsement of Patricia Madrid for his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Madrid served as the first woman attorney general in New Mexico's history and was the nation's first Latina attorney general. Madrid sent the following email to Martin's supporters:

We New Mexicans know that the road ahead in this country is tough. However, I want to share with you something that makes me feel much better about our future: Martin Heinrich.

Today, I proclaim my sincere and unwavering support for Martin Heinrich to become our next U.S. Senator.

As a proud New Mexican, whose family has lived in this state for generations, I know that Martin shares my values of hard work, compassion, and equality. From protecting our treasured public lands to helping small businesses become leaders in innovation, Martin has shown what he can do in Congress. If elected to the Senate, his leadership and influence would have an even greater impact on the future of New Mexico.

One of my proudest moments as New Mexico's Attorney General was re-opening an historic 2.6-mile stretch of road through the UU Bar Ranch in Colfax County that leads to the White Peak area. This land had been cut off from the public when out-of-state ranchers decided to put up a locked gate. White Peak is once again accessible to the hunters and hikers, and it needs to stay that way for generations to come.

Particularly in New Mexico, families have long histories of using public lands for hunting, fishing and other traditions, both new and old. Fighting for public access to public land is something I know Martin has always been committed to. In fact, he has made conservation a centerpiece of his public career.

As the Director for the Coalition for New Mexico Wilderness, Martin brought ranchers, Tribal leaders, and environmentalists together to win federal protection for the Ojito Wilderness. He later served New Mexico as the Natural Resources Trustee where he worked to restore contaminated lands and water using funds seized from environmental polluters. And in Congress, Martin was a strong supporter of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. The bill contains 12 provisions that help preserve New Mexico's natural resources and specifically ensures access to public lands for hunters and anglers. Martin also championed bipartisan legislation to promote renewable energy projects on public lands.

In November 2012, our country will be at a crossroad. I know that Martin is the best candidate to take on Heather Wilson and win. As we can all recall, Wilson and her Republican colleagues were more than willing to max out our nation's credit card on costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires-all without having the money in the bank to pay for it. Those are not New Mexico values and we simply cannot go back to her failed policies.

Martin has the drive and shares our values to help carry our state down the road to prosperity. I hope you'll join me in my support.

PATRICIA MADRID

Martin Heinrich Raises $650K in Q3 http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/martin-heinrich-raises-650k-in-q3 Wed, 05 Oct 2011 12:00:00 -0500 http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/martin-heinrich-raises-650k-in-q3
Impressive haul brings his cash total to over $1.1M

ALBUQUERQUE - When he files his third quarter fundraising report with the Federal Elections Commission on October 15, Martin Heinrich will show that he raised just over $650,000 between July 1 and September 30, 2011, for his campaign for the U.S. Senate. The campaign will also report a cash-on-hand total of more than $1.1 million.

The impressive total was fueled by 2,596 individuals, 94 percent of whom gave $200 or less.
"I am honored by the commitment of each and every person who, in the face of difficult times and adverse situations, invested in this campaign," Heinrich said. "We still have a long way to go, but given the outpouring of support, I know we will be successful, and I humbly thank everyone who stands with me."

"Pundits and prognosticators are already calling the 2011 third fundraising quarter ‘abysmal,'" former U.S. Ambassador Ed Romero said. "The fact that Martin was able to raise this much money in such a difficult environment proves several things, which I have believed for a long time: Martin gives 120 percent of himself to everything he does; no one can outwork Martin; and women and men all across our great state want to see Martin as their next United States senator."

Eastern Navajo Agency Council endorses Heinrich for Senate http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/eastern-navajo-agency-council-endorses-heinrich-for-senate Thu, 15 Sep 2011 14:16:00 -0500 http://www.martinheinrich.com/news/eastern-navajo-agency-council-endorses-heinrich-for-senate Council President says Martin Heinrich is “an effective advocate for the Navajo People”

ALBUQUERQUE (Sept. 15, 2011) - Today, the Eastern Navajo Agency Council announced their endorsement of Martin Heinrich in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. The Eastern Agency Navajo Council is compromised of 31 local Navajo Nation Chapters, a majority of which are located in New Mexico. The Council helps advocate on behalf of the local Chapters on issues related directly to the Navajo Nation Government.

“The Eastern Navajo Agency Council supports Congressman Martin Heinrich for U.S. Senate because he has proven to be a leader on many issues that are vital to our community and the needs of our people,” said Eastern Navajo Agency President Johnny Johnson. “We knew Martin before he was a Congressman, he was part of our community and truly understands our need for more infrastructure and education. We appreciate his leadership and know he will continue to be an effective advocate for the Navajo people in the United States Senate.”

”I’m honored to have the support of the Eastern Navajo Agency Council,” said Martin Heinrich. “As I have said in the past, too many people in Washington do not understand the unique issues of the Navajo people. That’s why I have made it a priority to foster sensible government-to-government relations so that federal policy meets the needs of our Native communities in New Mexico. I’ll continue that work in the United State Senate.”

Heinrich introduced the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Homeownership Act, or the HEARTH Act, in May 2009 during his first term in Congress, to remove barriers between Native American families and homeownership. In September 2009, Heinrich helped lead the effort in the U.S. House to reauthorize the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, and was successful in securing key language in the House version of the health insurance reform bill to modernize Indian health care.

SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES MARTIN HEINRICH FOR U.S. SENATE

ALBUQUERQUE (August 5, 2011) - The Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Martin Heinrich in his race for the United States Senate.  The organization has a strong presence in New Mexico with over 8,000 members in the Rio Grande Chapter.

"Throughout his career, Martin Heinrich has been an indispensable ally to those who champion the preservation of our natural environments and has proven time and again that he won’t back down to the polluters who wish to tear down decades of sound environmental policy ,” John Buchser, chair of the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, said.

Robin Mann, president of the Sierra Club adds, "Martin is exactly what New Mexico needs in the Senate – someone who has the practical experience and know-how to get things done.  Martin understands that New Mexico's future depends on ensuring our communities enjoy clean air and clean water, and building the clean energy economy that will bring new, good-paying jobs.”

During his time on the Albuquerque City Council and as a Member of Congress, Heinrich has never veered from his support for environmental protection and was the leading voice behind saving the Ojito Wilderness. Martin has a track record of supporting policies that reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change and pollute our air, and holding the polluters accountable under the Clean Air Act. Serving his second term on the House Committee on Natural Resources, Martin works tirelessly to protect New Mexico’s abundant natural resources and treasured public lands.

"I’m honored to have the support of an organization so important to protecting the land we live on, the air we breathe and the water we drink," said Martin Heinrich. “Together we've made progress in the audacious challenge of reversing climate change and jumpstarting our economy with clean energy jobs. In New Mexico, we understand the potential for clean energy to put people back to work. Through American ingenuity and the right policies we can unleash the full potential of this growing industry and protect our precious natural resources for generations to come.”

POJOAQUE PUEBLO ENDORSES MARTIN HEINRICH FOR SENATE

(ALBUQUERQUE) June 16, 2011 - The Martin Heinrich for Senate campaign today announced the endorsement of the Pojoaque Pueblo. Pojoaque Pueblo is the second pueblo to endorse Martin in the open seat race for New Mexico's next United States senator.

Governor George Rivera made the following statement in the Pueblo's June 15th release: "Since his election to Congress in 2008, Mr. Heinrich has proven to be a strong supporter of tribal sovereignty and our efforts toward self-sufficiency. He visited the Pueblo of Pojoaque in 2007 and continued visiting during his two terms in the House. He not only worked on our issues, he solved them. We are excited that Congressman Heinrich has chosen to run for the Senate. He has the energy, the exuberance and the intelligence to bring about change. He is a doer, not a talker. He will serve New Mexico well."

"I want to thank Governor Rivera and the rest of the members of Pojoaque for this incredible honor," Heinrich said. "As I have said in the past, too many people in Washington do not understand the unique issues of New Mexico's pueblo communities and tribes. That's why I have made it a priority to foster sensible government-to-government relations so that federal policy meets the needs of communities in New Mexico. I'll continue that work in the United States Senate."

Representative Heinrich introduced the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Homeownership Act, or the HEARTH Act, in May 2009 to remove barriers between Native American families and homeownership. In September 2009, Heinrich helped lead the effort in the U.S. House to reauthorize the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA), and was successful in securing key language in the House version of the health insurance reform bill to modernize Indian health care.

Heinrich's campaign for the United States Senate has received strong and early support from a variety of organizations such as labor unions, environmental organizations and advocates for senior citizens. The Pueblo of Pojoaque is the second pueblo to endorse Martin's campaign following the endorsement from the Taos Pueblo Tribal Council last week. TAOS PUEBLO ENDORSES MARTIN HEINRICH FOR SENATE

(ALBUQUERQUE) June 15, 2011 - The Martin Heinrich for Senate campaign today announced the endorsement of the Taos Pueblo Tribal Council. Taos Pueblo is the first pueblo to endorse in the open seat race for New Mexico's next United States senator.

"It is an honor to have the backing of a pueblo so fundamental to New Mexico's past, present and future," Heinrich said. "Too many people in Washington don't understand the unique issues of New Mexico's pueblo communities and tribes. That's why I have made it a priority to foster sensible government-to-government relations so that federal policy meets the needs of communities in New Mexico. I'll continue that work in the United States Senate."

"Martin Heinrich has proven he is an effective advocate on tribal issues," said Taos Pueblo Governor Nelson J. Cordova. "The Tribal Council truly appreciates Martin's support for the Taos Pueblo water settlement, as well as his leadership introducing the HEARTH Act and passing the Indian Health Care Improvement Act. We know Martin understands the unique concerns of our pueblo and Indian people because he works side-by-side with our communities."
