Darren White's Competence Questioned

Submitted by campaign staff on May 3, 2008 - 8:11am.

Last night on KNME, Darren White's primary opponent questioned White's competence and White, George Bush's 2004 campaign chair, once again pledged his support for President Bush.

White's primary opponent cited a vote of no confidence in Darren White's leadership. Here's the story. In September 1999, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported that "an overwhelming majority of the members of the New Mexico State Police Association voted no confidence in Darren White." Rick Anglada, then vice president of the Police Association said, "A good leader needs to gain the people's trust... you talk to our members, and they don't trust him because he says one thing and does another." In September 1999, 89% of the voters - hard working New Mexico police officers - voted no confidence in Darren White's leadership. There was 61% NMSPA turnout for that vote.

White's primary opponent also claimed that while White promised to reduce crime when he ran for Sheriff, crime actually increased on White's watch. According to Bernalillo County's crime statistics, between 2003 and 2006, murders have increased every year and robberies are up nearly 92%. White first won election in 2002 and the 2007 crime reports are not yet available on the Bernalillo County website.

Scores of police officers expressed no confidence in White's leadership, and, given White's lockstep support for the failed policies of George Bush and Dick Cheney, it's clear that New Mexico voters shouldn't have any confidence in his leadership either.
