Protecting New Mexico's Natural Heritage

New Mexico’s natural resources are the lifeblood of our state, driving our economy and sustaining our communities.

Martin has been a steadfast advocate for conservation throughout his entire career in public service, from his time on the Albuquerque City Council to his tenure in the Senate. Martin has worked tirelessly to protect our public lands from exploitation and degradation, and he understands that safeguarding our environment is not just about preserving landscapes – it’s about ensuring a sustainable future for all New Mexicans. Martin has also been a strong voice for action on climate change, advocating for policies to reduce emissions and promote renewable energy. He knows that addressing climate change is crucial for protecting our natural heritage and ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.

How Martin has delivered for New Mexicans:

  • Designated White Sands as a National Park. Martin successfully championed the elevation of White Sands to national park status, ensuring its protection and enhancing its appeal as a destination. The region has seen $13 million in economic impact since White Sands received national park status.

  • Passed the Great American Outdoors Act. This landmark legislation addresses billions of dollars in deferred maintenance for public lands, ensuring their preservation and accessibility for future generations; fully funded the Land and Water Conservation Fund, to continue growing our public land legacy in New Mexico and across the country; and included Martin’s Every Kid Outdoors Act, to give America’s fourth graders and their families free entrance to our public lands, waters, and historic sites.

  • Championed the creation of the Rio Grande Del Norte and Organ Mountains Desert-Peaks National Monuments. Martin’s advocacy led to the protection of these significant landscapes, safeguarding their natural beauty and cultural heritage, and delivering $35 million in local economic impact.

  •  Created the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness in the Carson National Forest. Martin played a pivotal role in designating this area as wilderness, protecting it from development and preserving its pristine condition.

  • Played an instrumental role in creating the Sabinoso Wilderness and unlocking public access. Martin’s efforts were crucial in establishing the Sabinoso Wilderness and securing public access, opening up this remote area for public enjoyment.

  • Pushed the creation of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park into law. Recognizing the historical significance of the Manhattan Project, Martin helped establish this national park to preserve and interpret its legacy.

  • Expanded public access to the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Martin passed legislation to increase public access and placed the National Park Service in charge of its management, ensuring its long-term conservation.
