Senator Heinrich Articulates a Clear Vision for the Future of New Mexico
Heinrich: “We are stronger as a country when we’re all in this together”
ALBUQUERQUE, NM–Earlier this week Sen. Martin Heinrich and his opponent, former hedge fund executive Nella Domenici, each sat for in-depth interviews with KRQE anchor Dean Staley. While Domenici engaged in evasion and obfuscation, Heinrich touted considerable legislative accomplishments, emphasized his values, and articulated a clear vision for the future of New Mexico.
Staley opened his interview with Heinrich by asking about economic hardships facing New Mexicans, particularly with regard to the negative effects of inflation and the skyrocketing prices of homes. Heinrich acknowledged these difficulties but pointed to the progress he’s made to help lower costs, noting “I’m really proud of the work that we did in the Inflation Reduction Actto bring down costs, especially in the energy sector and as well as prescription drugs.” In response to homeownership, Heinrich advocated for zoning reform and incentives to build more homes, which will bring housing prices down. Heinrich stated, “The real answer is we need to build more housing, and we need zoning reform so that it’s easier to, for example, add additional quarters on single family residential lots.”
The interview also addressed abortion. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s disastrous Dobbs decision, abortion has become a particularly vital issue in this election. Heinrich passionately reaffirmed his support for reproductive rights and his desire to pass protections for the right to choose at the national level. His position remains clear and concise: “I think we leave it up to women, and it’s a decision that should be made between individuals and their health care providers.”
Heinrich also drew a stark contrast between himself and his opponent, stating, “She attacked me when I supported a national effort to codify Roe v Wade. I think that if you elect Nella Domenici to the Senate, the Senate will be Republican, and they have an agenda for a national abortion ban.”
On the topics of border security, immigration and fentanyl-related crime, Heinrich emphasized his support for the bipartisan immigration billattempted by congress earlier this year, but also explained that Republicans torpedoed this bill at the behest of Donald Trump, who wanted to run on the issue of immigration. Heinrich staked out his own position on immigration stating, “I’ve been at the table three times now for real, substantive immigration reform, which includes making documented legal immigration easier and making it harder to abuse the asylum system that the cartels have gotten very good at abusing.” Heinrich also championed the passage of the Fend Off Fentanyl Act, which he co-sponsored, that will help prevent the flow of narcotics into the state.
“Senator Heinrich detailed his record of results for New Mexicans on lowering costs for working families, protecting reproductive rights, addressing border security and keeping our communities safe. Just as importantly, he articulated a clear vision for the future for our state,” said Heinrich campaign manager Brad Elkins.
