CAUGHT ON TAPE: Nella Domenici Calls Legislation to Restore Federal Right to Abortion a “Sham”
In an interview with Albuquerque Journal Columnist Jay Newton-Small, GOP candidate finally admits her extreme position on abortion; Staffer interrupts interview to change the topic
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — In a damning interview conducted by Jay Newton-Small and published by the Albuquerque Journal, U.S. Senate Candidate Nella Domenici finally admits to New Mexicans her real position on the right to abortion, calling a proposal to restore federal protections to abortion a “sham.”
In the audio recording, Domenici, when pressed by the columnist on how she would vote for legislation in the Senate that guarantees the right to an abortion, responds: “That is a sham, and people should know that as a sham.”
Recognizing that Domenici has admitted her real stance on abortion on record, her staffer quickly interrupts the interview and asks the columnist to change the subject: “We're talking hypotheticals here. Do you have any other points you can talk about?”

True to form, Nella also dodges a question on whether she would label herself as “pro-choice,” stating that she doesn’t believe these words have “meaning anymore.”
“As the saying goes, when somebody shows you who they really are, believe them the first time. Nella finally revealed to New Mexicans who she really is, and voters won’t be fooled by her in November,” said Brad Elkins, campaign manager. “While Martin Heinrich makes no apologies in standing up for New Mexican women to make their health care decisions for their bodies and their futures, Nella Domenici is finally revealing her true and extreme position on abortion.”
Heinrich remains unwavering in his commitment to protecting and restoring the right to abortion as guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.
Heinrich is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation to restore the right to an abortion under federal law. He is also a cosponsor of a number of bills to expand access to reproductive health care, including the Right to IVF Act, the Protecting Service Members and Military Families’ Access to Health Care Act, and the Right to Contraception Act, among others.
